What Is Scalp PRP for Hair Loss?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is an evidence-backed, autologous (using your own blood) regenerative treatment for androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and other forms of hair thinning. At Essentia Derma, we use a double-spin centrifugation protocol that yields PRP with a platelet concentration 4–6× above baseline, ensuring optimal growth factor delivery to the hair follicle.
Key growth factors in PRP — PDGF, VEGF, TGF-β, EGF, IGF-1 — collectively stimulate follicular stem cells, prolong the anagen (growth) phase, and promote neo-vascularisation of the scalp microenvironment.
How Does It Work?
Approximately 10–20 ml of venous blood is drawn and centrifuged at calibrated speeds to separate plasma rich in activated platelets. This concentrate is injected into the sub-dermal plane of the scalp at 1 cm intervals across thinning zones using a mesotherapy technique. Growth factors are released locally, binding to follicular receptors to reverse miniaturisation.
Key Benefits
Reduces excessive daily hair shedding within 4–6 weeks
Increases hair shaft diameter and density
Reactivates miniaturised follicles in the early stages
Completely natural — no synthetic drugs or hormones
Compatible with oral minoxidil or finasteride for synergistic effect
Zero allergy risk — uses patient's own blood
Are You a Good Candidate?
Suitable for men and women with Norwood–Hamilton Grade I–IV (male) or Ludwig Grade I–II (female) hair loss, diffuse thinning, and post-partum or stress-related telogen effluvium. Most effective when follicles are still present (not scarred alopecia). Not recommended for patients with platelet disorders, anticoagulant therapy, or active scalp infection.
What Happens During the Procedure?
Scalp & Blood Assessment
Trichoscopy (scalp dermoscopy) to quantify follicular units and miniaturisation degree.
Blood Draw
10–20 ml drawn from antecubital vein into PRP tubes containing sodium citrate anticoagulant.
Centrifugation
Double-spin protocol: first spin separates cells from plasma; second spin concentrates platelets.
Activation
Autologous thrombin or calcium chloride added to activate platelet degranulation.
Scalp Injection
PRP injected at 1 cm grid intervals into the sub-dermal layer of thinning zones using 30G needles. Topical anaesthetic or nerve block used for comfort.
Post-Care
Scalp is cleaned. Patient advised no hair wash for 24 hours, avoid direct sun for 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Scalp PRP for Hair Loss
PRP is most effective when hair follicles are still present but miniaturised (thinning). In completely bald patches where follicles are absent or scarred, PRP alone cannot regenerate new follicles. Your dermatologist will assess via trichoscopy to determine suitability.
The entire procedure — blood draw, centrifugation, and scalp injection — takes approximately 60–75 minutes. Most patients experience minor scalp sensitivity for 24–48 hours post-procedure.
Yes. PRP is highly complementary to medical therapy. Combining PRP with oral/topical minoxidil or finasteride typically yields faster and more sustained results than either treatment alone.
A standard loading course is 4 sessions, 1 month apart. After the loading course, a maintenance session every 3–6 months helps sustain results. Ongoing medical therapy significantly extends the interval between maintenance sessions.
